Mathias and Nompilo Höcher laughing together at Matilo

Our story

A place we dreamed of,
then built with our own hands.

Matilo began with a simple idea: What if we created a place where people could slow down, reconnect and remember how good it feels to simply be together? That idea became Matilo.

It started
with a feeling.

We came to the Klein Karoo looking for a home of our own. A place to slow down, breathe a little deeper and enjoy the quiet beauty of the mountains.

And then we found Matilo.

We fell in love with the landscape, the stillness and the feeling of being here. What began as a home for the two of us slowly became something we felt we couldn't keep to ourselves.

We began to wonder: what if other people could experience this too?

So we opened our home.

Today, Matilo is still deeply personal to us. It is a place shaped by our love for nature, for quiet moments and for the simple pleasure of being together. We created the cabins to feel warm and unhurried — a place to take things a little slower for a while and simply be.

A name made from two hearts.

The name Matilo is a little piece of both of us — Mat, from Mathias, and ilo, from Nompilo. Woven together, it became the name of our home and the place we now get to share with others.

Matilo isn't just somewhere we invite you to stay.

It's a little piece of our world, opened up for you.

With love,
Mathias & Nompilo

And then there's Honey.

Honey has been part of our family long before Matilo became what it is today.

She came with us when we left the city and made our home here in the Klein Karoo. She has watched this little place grow, settled into the slower pace of country life and, in her own quiet way, become part of what makes Matilo feel like home.

These days, Honey is an old girl. She spends her days taking things a little slower, finding a sunny spot and enjoying the peaceful life she has grown into.

Honey is simply enjoying the slower pace of life — and we wouldn't have it any other way.

A note for our guests

Honey lives with us on the property, not at the cabins. You may see her wandering around from time to time. She is very much part of our family and enjoys saying hello, but please don't feed her. If her visits become a disturbance during your stay, just let us know and we'll happily keep her with us in the house.

What matters to us

A place to slow down.
And feel at home.

Time together

A place to put the phones down, breathe a little deeper and enjoy being present with the person beside you.

The beauty around us

We fell in love with the mountains, the open skies and the quietness of the Klein Karoo. We want you to feel that same sense of wonder.

A home, not just a stay

Matilo began as our own home. Everything we have created here is personal, thoughtful and made to feel warm, comfortable and unhurried.

Something to remember

We hope you leave feeling rested, reconnected and carrying a few beautiful moments with you — long after you've gone home.

Meet the owners

Two people. One home.
One little piece of the Klein Karoo.

Nompilo

The heart behind the everyday

Nompilo looks after the day-to-day running of Matilo, making sure everything feels just right — from welcoming guests and preparing for arrivals to the little details that make a stay feel warm, comfortable and cared for.

She is often the person behind the scenes making things happen, keeping everything running smoothly and making sure our guests feel at home from the moment they arrive.

Mathias

The hands behind Matilo

Mathias is the builder, property manager and fixer behind Matilo. From building the cabins to maintaining the property and taking care of the things most people never see, he is always busy making sure Matilo is cared for.

Much of what you see at Matilo has passed through his hands — built, repaired and maintained with the same care that went into creating our home in the first place.

Together, we look after Matilo — and we're so happy to share it with you.
